Burg Schönecken (also Burg Schonecken) located is Shönecken, Germany is castle ruins that loom over this small village town. It’s a great place to see some ruins and a great overview of the village.
It’s also an ideal place to see ruins if you have family visiting or little ones who can’t walk far. While the Manderscheid Castle ruins are great they involve a good deal of walking/hiking so are not ideal for those who may be limited with walking.
When you get to the village there will be signs like above helping direct you to the Burg. Note some of the roads are narrow and windy, luckily we took the car that day and not the Yeti (van). I’m sure it’s able to be driven in a bigger vehicle it’s just a little less for us to worry about in a smaller car 😉
The walk from the small parking area is about 1 minute, less if you walk fast.
The ruins are so tall! Literally towering over you. It’s quite impressive.
There are a few benches and large grassy areas which make it ideal for a nice picnic spot. As you can see Bub is enjoying the bench.
The remains of one tower provides a great overlook of the village and a nice backdrop for photos.
Bea took a picture of us
Then posed for her own picture
Mr. B also thinks it’s a great place for ‘selfies’ LOL! Bea caught him in the act!
I love the overview of this village.
You can see the massive size compared to Mr. B & Bea
I spy a church through the Burg window.
Our beautiful Bea!
A little history at the Burg, although it’s all in German.
We were using the Panther Paws and went to the hotel they had listed that is supposed to have a great view of the Burg, unfortunately we found that its now closed and gated up so there is no view from there.
We did this after visiting Römische Villa Otrang and then headed to Bitburg. It made for a quick day trip (about 2 hours from start to finish) and allowed us to go see some local sights and still be able to run some errands.
