I had a huge wall just screaming for a travel gallery wall, it was so much fun putting it together! I used things that we’ve collected over our travels, things I made, and other decor to make it complete. I also was offered a complementary Travel Map from 76th & Newbury for the wall as well, I adore it!
For the travel wall I knew I wanted suitcase on the wall so I found an old one and had my hubby remove the front so I could hang it as a shelf, I love the aged look of it. Then I wanted to display some items in it like my vintage camera, a small plane, and a vintage alarm clock I scored at a floh markt.
The wall is above my Japanese Tansu that we have laid out buffet style instead of stair style, as that is much easier for me to decorate that way. To the left of it is a vintage wooden crate from a flea market in AL that I have standing up as a bookshelf. On the top shelf is travel books while the bottom shelf contains fairy tales & legends from where we have lived & traveled. Sitting on the shelf is a fantastic wooden birdhouses that we got in Germany that I adore. To the right is a german sled that I painted white and distressed.
Looking at the wall from left to right you’ll find a wide range of items. From clocks, signs, frames, to a compass rose. The buffet display changes as time goes along. Right now it has the floh markt drawers as the centerpiece with a vintage globe on the right and some other vintage items to the left as well. Every time we move it gets a new set up and I like to change it up as we pick up new items as well. That’s the one thing I love about the the wall and display is that it evolves as we do.
The center focal point is the travel map from 76th & Newbury. It came as a print so we had to find a frame for it, I knew that was going to be difficult here in Guam since the print is 30 in by 20 in. We ended up just making a custom frame for it, it ended up being super easy and cheap. We got the wood from Home Depot and had them cut it there to save us some time. So with the wood, stain, and brackets it only cost us $13 to make and less than an hour, which is much cheaper than a frame that size would’ve cost.
One of the best things about the travel map is that your able to fully customize it to fit you! I choose the turquoise color because those are the colors I have on the travel wall. I also had World Traveling Military Family put across the top. You can choose a quote as well, I just went with the one they had because it’s one of my favorites ‘Not all those who wander are lost.’ And for those who live in Guam you can get them shipped here! It’s made so you can mark it with sharpie or put stickers on it for the places that you’ve visited. I have issues doing that so I may just mark all the places that we’ve been stationed.
