If your heading to Cologne (Köln) you need to check out the Cologne Cathedral (Köln Dom) there. It’s quite impressive and worth the visit. There is also a lock bridge only a 5 minute walk behind the Dom as well.
There is lots of parking in the parking garage under the Cathedral and walkplatz. And NO it is NOT hard to drive in Cologne to get there, I see people say that all the time. I’m not a fan of driving in busy cities but I was able to easily take my mom and kids while Mr. B was at work without any issues. After you park the exits will take you up to the walkplatz. If your needing restrooms after the drive there are some under the gift shop, you’ll see signs and stairs going down, we missed these when we first arrived and had to go to McD’s.
You can walk around the church at your own leisure, we went on a Thursday and it was fairly busy. There were priests walking around talking, taking pics, etc while we were there. Not sure if there is an English guide or not but it would be handy to know what your actually looking at.
You’ll need to pay a fee to climb up the tower and see the treasury, we did not do either of those. They do offer a family card as well.
There are some huge beautiful stained glass windows here.
The mosaic floor look like they took forever to make!
Huge organ in this cathedral also.
There is so much detail in the designs that decorate the outside of the building.
While it’s not the most breathtaking one we’ve seen so far it was quite impressive.
After walking around you can walk just 5 minutes behind the church and see a lock bridge over the Rhine river. It’s at the train stop.
Rhine river view.
And of course a view back towards the towering cathedral.
Then we drove 15 minutes to the Chocolate Museum which was fun and tasty!
