Recently we decided to act like Local Tourists and go visit some of the places that we’ve haven’t been to yet here in Montgomery, AL. Need to get them checked off the ‘list’ before we PCS ;p
Ok, so I have to admit that in almost 5 years we’ve been here this time (2nd tour here!) we have never made it down to the Montgomery Riverwalk, which is quite ironic since we drive past it on a weekly basis to get to Maxwell from Gunter.
We decided to go check it out, and of course take pics and blog about it. Driving through downtown you’ll see this sign over the tunnel out to the Riverwalk on Commerce St. You can park on this street, on either side, and it’s metered parking. It was cheap though, the rates were 5 cents for 6 minutes, so for 50 cents you can easily get 1 hour.
Once you walk through the tunnel to the Riverwalk you immediately see the Harriot II Riverboat, which you can cruise and dine on. We have never done it, imagine that LOL, but Bub did go on it for a field trip at the end of this school year and it was better than he expected, which is saying a lot for a soon to be 7th grade boy who did not want to go.
A view down the river. As you can see it was overcast the day we went and even rained on us a few times, but it was all good because we were there just quickly to check it out, and if you’ve ever lived in Europe sighting in the rain is the norm!
One of the historic marker signs, there are a few to read along the Riverwalk area. There is also this HUGE pole in the water near the Riverboat of where it flooded back in 1961, and the river rose to 58 ft 1 inch high! You can see a video about it at the Montgomery Advertiser site.
It had some great spots for photo shoot potential, may have to try to do some down here sometime!

Then we walked over towards the Riverwalk Amphitheater where they often have local events going on, although we have not attended any. I think the reason we haven’t been down here is because they have really been cleaning up and revamping the area the past few years, making it much cleaner and safer, but it wasn’t like that when we lived here before and I think that still lingers in the back of my mind. The city has done a great job and it’s patrolled regularly by police on bikes as well.
There is this neat mosaic of the capital building on the way to the Splash Pad.
At the splash pad there are picnic tables under a covered area as well as restrooms and water fountains close by. The kids did not get in it the day we went because the weather was not cooperating but I can see it begin a fun way for them too cool off in the hot summers here.
So after overcoming our issues and visiting the Riverwalk I can say that we were all pleasantly surprised with what we found. We hope to go back on a day with better weather and look around some more!
We also checked out Union Station Visitors center and ate at Chris’ Hot Dogs, which will be in an upcoming blog post, so check back soon!

Yeah, it’s sad it’s taken us this long to check it all out, but better late than never right?! ;p

It’s funny: when you live somewhere, it seems like you usually don’t visit the cool stuff in town! I’ve lived near Dallas for my whole life except for 4 years during college, and I’ve never done touristy things like go to the JFK 5th Floor Museum.

Yeah and then you get orders and you have to hurry and see everything ;p LOL!
