Reading Between the Lines is a fascinating church sculpture created by Gijs Van Vaerebergh in Borgloon, Belgium. It’s not worth making a special trip out there for BUT it’s only 15 mins from Tongeren where many people go to shop the Sunday Flea Market (post coming soon) so a great addition to that trip.
First let me say this, this sculpture is NOT a full sized church building, I think many people show up expecting it to be. It is very large and quite a few people can fit inside at one time (maybe 10-15ish) so know that before you go. It is also out in the middle of no where and can be a bit difficult to find! Some people have even posted bad advice such as driving down the walking path area to get to it, please do NOT do that. There is no parking and the locals will not be happy. I’ve provided info for where to park.
To get to the sculpture use the GPS address below and then drive just past the address, do NOT turn left. Keep going down the road and shortly on the right you’ll see a free parking area.
Then cross the street and follow the signs to the path for the sculpture.
It’s about 500 meters off the road and is a good 10-15 min walk. The path is not real smooth so wear good waking shoes. You’ll be walking through the crops & fields which seemed a bit weird to my mom who was visiting but Europeans love them some hiking paths. The only thing at the sculpture is that itself and a grassy area, there were some folks there having a picnic when we went.
We took a few pictures, checked out the inside, and hiked back out to the car. One of the neat things about Reading Between the Lines is that you get a different view looking at it at different angles.
View looking up into the steeple, I loved this!
And to give you and idea of the size of the inside of the sculpture.
Again as I said before it’s not something I would say need to make a special trip out there for otherwise you may be underwhelmed but if your in the area I’d say make sure to take a few mins to stop and see this neat sculpture!
