If your looking for a unique change of pace to the traditional market check out the Underground Wine Cellars Christmas Market in Traben-Trarbach, Germany! We went last year and luckily it snowed for us making it even more magical! Experience shopping the vendors placed throughout the historic wine cellars in the village. There is no entrance fee to any of the cellars, and there are a few so make sure you check them all out! It’s a quick drive from Spangdahlem and not real far from Ramstein either.
This year (2015-2016) it runs on the weekends (Fri, Sat, & Sun) from 11 am to 9 pm from Nov. 27th to Dec. 20th. Then it’ll run daily from 11 am to 9 pm from Dec. 21st to Jan. 3rd, 2016. Note it is closed on Dec. 24th, 25th, & 31st.
Parking is free and there are several parking areas. If you go to their site HERE and download the PDF file under Parking coaches at the bottom it’ll bring up a map with all the parking areas. This is a great tool to have ahead of time as parking can be tricky if you don’t know where to look! Also follow the blue P signs as well.
If the tourism office is open (closed on Sundays) then you can get a map with all the cellars and figure out how to get there. If not you can do what we did and stop and ask someone to point you in the right direction. All of the cellars are within walking distance of each other. Two are really close and one is over by the skating rink.
There are also handy maps posted around the village, note not all of them are cellars/markets.
The cellars (kellers) are marked so you can follow those signs as well.
Cellar (Keller) #3
You find many types of vendors from decor to clothing and some food.
Cellar #2, note you have to open the door and go down the steps.
Once inside your transported to a magical Christmas Market setting.
You’ll even find a little bakery inside one!
If you get the chance to visit this village when it’s snowing, then do so! It’s so lovely covered in snow and really adds to the experience.
Ruins rising from above the snow clouds, it doesn’t get better than that!
Snow covered vineyards, check!

I have to say,, I have been following you for a little while now and I am in aw of the places you visit.
I am also in Germany, just a little further north than you so I can’t exactly repeat some of your trips but this one I will make an extra effort to achieve… And you always know the exact information travelers want to know. Too many times I open a site trying to decide if I should leave my stroller at home and no one can answer me. I really appreciate the insight

Hi there!
I’m so glad your enjoying our travels 🙂 While we don’t have littles anymore I do have quite a few friends with them and I remember how challenging it can be traveling with them when I couldn’t find the info I needed to know! I’m glad that your finding it helpful! The wine cellars are neat, something different, and there are a few other things you can see in the village too. It’s a beautiful drive and you could even go hit up the ruins if you had time and the weather is nice, it was too snowy for us to get up there, which we didn’t mind 😉
