We went to Wallenborn, Germany to check out the cold water geyser and the Imkerei Mehler (honey shop & bee aviary). It’s another day trip we got to cross off the Panther Paws list as well!
Wallenborn, Germany is a short 30 minutes from the Spangdahlem area. Here you can see the cold water geyser which is 1 of only 3 in all of Europe, there are only 2 located here in Germany.
The little brown building is the ticket booth, the geyser is located across the bridge to the right.
When we arrived the geyser had just gone off before we’d gotten there so the lady at the ticket booth told us we had another 30-35 minutes before it went off again. We walked 2 minutes down the road to Imkerei Mehler to see the store and buy some local honey. You can sample all the different kinds of honey as well. They also sell other products made with honey like soaps, lotions, candles, etc.
There are several interesting statues to be found on the walk over.
As well as this creepy guy hanging in the tree, it’s supposed to show how they used to collect honey but it was just really creepy, LOL!
The lady did not speak much English but the two teenagers did and they took us over to see the aviary and the bees.
The bee aviary is to the right and behind the yellow building.
The girls were great with answering our questions and helped us to find the queen bee. Bea found all of this fascinating.
Then it was time to head back over to get ready for the geyser to go off.
After seeing the huge geysers in Iceland this was a ‘baby’ geyser for us, but it was the first cold water one for us. As you can see it doesn’t get real high (well compared to the Icelandic ones) and the high part is very short, but it did continue to bubble & gush low for a good 8 minutes, which explains why there is so much rock area around the geyser because it flooded that whole area.
I’ve also included a video of the geyser:
This trip makes for a quick little day trip that’s close to the Spang area yet gets you out of the house for a bit.
