Hong Kong Express is a discount airline that flies from Guam to Hong Kong. It was here until June of 2017 and then then pulled out BUT they will be coming back starting Oct 31st! They will fly to Nagoya, Japan & Hong Kong! We recently used them and had a great experience. Here’s what you need to know:
They offer some great sales so sign up for the free newsletter to be notified. We used the B1G1 sale in April for Spring Break. Our family of 4 flew round trip from Guam to HK for $650! I also priced for us to fly to Japan & it’s looking like $550 with sale prices!
You do have to pay a few dollars if you want to chose certain seats, you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it for your family. We paid $48 to choose better seats and sit together where we wanted, sometimes I just have to splurge a little. When we get cheap tickets like this it’s easier to justify spending a little more to choose seats 😉
Also you have to pay for checked baggage or just use the free carry on allowance. We did that with Ryan Air so we are used to it. We took no checked bags to HK so we didn’t pay any extra fees. We were there for 4 nights & 5 days and easily managed it in carryons. Your allowed 1 carry on bag that is 15.4 lbs (7 kg), it needs to be 22” by 14” by 9” and 1 personal item.
Hong Kong Express is a discount airline but I’d say a higher quality than RyanAir. I was excited to find the seats fairly comfortable & reclining seats! Unlike the no reclining ones on RyanAir. The 5 hour flight to HK was great, something I wouldn’t be able to tolerate on Ryan Air that long…3 hours is my max with them!
The one possible downside to Hong Kong Express is that your not allowed to bring your own food & water on. For us it’s not that big of a deal as we generally eat before & after the flights. When purchasing your tickets you can pre order bottled water & meals at a discounted rate. We just ordered water & decided if we wanted food we’d get it then. We didn’t even up needing or purchasing food. They do do bag inspections before flight boarding & will make you get rid of any liquids. On the return trip I had some snickers & crackers in my bad to eat while driving home and they didn’t say anything. As long as your not eating it on the flight they may tolerant. You can read about it HERE and see the menu (click on the menu pic to see the full menu & prices).
I’m so excited that they are coming back so we can use them to get to Japan. It can also open up Space A options as it’s often easy to get to Japan from Guam, but much harder to get back. With cheap flights it can help you to get back to Guam & still have a cheap trip.
I found your page on FB and follow religiously. My husband and I hope to go to Japan from San Antonio Texas on a Mac flight in November or December. My son is teaching in Nagoya Japan and I really want to see him then. Any pointers you can give us will be greatly appreciated!
Make your way to Travis or SEATAC and you should be able to get to Japan. Keep in mind Space A is much more crowded around the holidays and school breaks. Best of luck!!
