Since we are moving to Italy this summer I have been doing some research and found that we would need to get an International Driver’s license (IDL) or as AAA calls it a International Driver’s Permit. While we don’t need it to drive in Italy, the AFI will cover us in Italy, but to drive outside of Italy we need it, and we plan on driving outside of Italy. If we waited to apply for it via mail once we got to Italy then we’d be restricted to where we could travel until they arrived, and I did not want to be restricted or waiting on mail 😉
So I went to the AAA website and filled out the form, had Mr. B fill out his and email it to me. Then I printed out 2 passport sized photos for each of us. Mr. B also had to email me a copy of his Driver’s License. The website says you need to sign the back of the photos BUT you only need to do that if mailing, not if done in the office, per what the lady in the office told me today.
I found a local office and just walked in, no appointment needed. I was in and out in under 10 minutes! If you go to a local AAA office you walk out the door with the IDL in hand. Also they can issue the IDL for up to 6 months prior to you leaving, so since we aren’t PCSing until late this summer we had it start in Aug. They are good for a year so that way it will be good for a year as soon as we get to Italy.
They were $15 each so it cost me $30 to get both. I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to get one for Mr. B with him being deployed but I did not have any problems at all! They were very nice and helpful!
It was a super easy process and super fast! And one more thing check off the ‘to-do’ list!! Up next is applying for our VISA’s and shipping the car!
