Awhile back at the NAF Sale I scored this dresser…well they called it a TV stand…for $30. While it’s dark piece, which I like, it was banged up and scratched up enough that I knew I’d have to refinish it. It also had a small piece broken off on the side, which had to be glued back on.
So I started with this and I knew I’d have to refinish it similar to the dining room table because of the laminate finish.
I grabbed my sander and 80 grit paper and sanded just enough to get the shiny off and scratch it up so the primer would stick. I also made sure not to sand too hard because I didn’t want to go through the laminate, I’ve done that before! I did see some blogs that said I could just use the primer and not sand but I figured it would only take me a few mins so I might as well go ahead and make sure it would ‘stick.’ After sanding I wiped it down with a wet cloth to get all the stuff off.
Then I grabbed my oil based primer and set to work getting it all covered, I had used this primer for our dining room table and I knew it worked great so I just stuck with what I knew worked.
I ended up putting 3 coats on to make sure it was really well covered, I’m sure two coats would’ve done but again I wanted to make sure. I used a foam roller and foam brush to put it on. That way I could easily throw away after use instead of trying to clean off the oil based primer, which is a pain! After it dried I sanded down a few rough areas and wiped it off and got ready to paint.
Primed and ready to paint!
I decided to use a red paint that I had picked up on clearance, I had used it for an American wood flag project and loved the color. I knew I wanted to use it to paint something…I just wasn’t sure what, so this was the perfect opportunity to both use it and finish off the can before we PCS. I started to put it on with a foam roller but didn’t like the way it was looked, so I switched to a paint brush. I put 3 coats of red paint on and the paint brush gave it a dry brush look that I LOVE!
First coat of paint, and yes that is the sign that I asked Boo why in the world he brought 2 of them home for…they’ve been great for using for my projects 😉
After it dried, which took 2 days for it to fully dry since it wasn’t the best weather here. I finished it off with a semi-gloss polyurethane which I applied with a foam roller and foam brush. I went ahead and put 3 coats of that on as well. I let it dry for 24 hours and then it was ready to be brought into the house.
Dry brush look
Project completed! It only took about 2-3 hours total (over a few days time of course) so it really wasn’t too bad and I love my $30 dresser!
