This was our first year going to the Trier Christmas Market. Unfortunately I can’t say that I was super impressed but we went so I can check it off our list! I think the hardest part is the the Christmas markets are all pretty much the same and the few awesome ones we’ve seen make it hard for the ’standard’ ones to live up too, LOL!
Parking is hard to find in Trier so know where the parking garages are and plan to use one, meaning bring a vehicle that is going to fit in them as well. We took the car and we even had a tough time getting that into a spot in the parking garage!
The part of the market we seen (near the McDonalds) was fairly small and crowded. Apparently there was more over past H&M but I’m not a fan of the ones that are all spread out and have you running through mazes to find them. The kids got fries from this little place.
We went on a Saturday night and the crowd level was tolerable, it was decent on the outer stalls but the inner stalls/area was a bit too crowded for me.
There is also an ice skating area by Dunkin Donuts and there were 2 food stands there as well but that was it. We stopped in there to grab some drinks.
Luckily we went there to shop in the walkplatz as well so it wasn’t a complete wash, the stores in the Walkplatz are open until 7 pm on Saturdays.
There was a carousel in the McDonald’s area as well.
As for shopping the stalls we didn’t see a lot of handmade items, mainly stuff brought in to sell.
They did have these awesome chocolate that look like tools, screws, etc!
Mr. B had the hot chocolate so that he could get a mug, we’ve decided to collect these at the Christmas markets that we visit.
Bub wanted some churros so we got some, the ends were unusually hard as I found out when I bit into one and broke the glue off my permanent retainer! This led to my first off base visit to the German dentist the following week. For me even the food was subpar at this Christmas Market. We had some potatoes as well but they were bland. Churros were €3, potatoes €3,50 and the hot chocolate in a souvenir mug was €5.
Now that we’ve crossed it off the list we won’t be making it back for a second visit. There are just too many to see and this one wasn’t very exciting for us.
Did you have a better experience at the Trier Christmas Market?
Know Before You Go:
What: Trier Christmas Market in Trier, Germany.
How To Get There: It’s about 35 minutes from Spangdahlem and 1 hour from Ramstein.
Parking: There are several parking garages to use in Trier, costs depend on how long your there.
Cost: Take Euro, amount depends on if you’ll be eating and shopping the market, we didn’t spend very much at all, under €30.
Traveling with little kids: It was crowded in areas so a stroller could be difficult, however outside the Christmas Market in the walkplatz the stroller would be fine. Also know it’s much more crowded on the weekends vs the weekdays.
How long: Plan on at least 1 hour, longer depending on how interested you are in the stalls and food vendors.

Looks like fun! We have been to two Christmas Markets so far and both were during the day. I hope we can get to one in the evening to see all the pretty lights 🙂
