If you like hunting for a deal Tongeren Flea Market in Belgium may be the place for you, it takes place every Sunday. It’s about 1 hour 30 mins from Spangdahlem. We finally made the trip there while my mom was here and for me I was a bit disappointed as prices ran high and vendors were not willing to haggle, but I’m a thrifty kind of gal. We did get a few things so it wasn’t a total waste. We also visited the Reading Between the Lines church sculpture that is near here as well.
The hardest part we found about the flea market was trying to find a bathroom! We found one in a coffee shop but it said for customers only, it is sure not easy to find one around there! When you get to the main square if you got the left and then take a right at the first street there is a budding on the left, in it on the right side is a cafe where we got lunch. There are bathrooms here and you pay €0.50 to use.
Looking at the main square if you start here and go to the right you’ll go in a circle around the vendors and end back up here at the end. Then you can also go further down the road to the left as well.
Don’t miss the pie lady! She’s down on the right just past the main square, the cherry pie was amazing! The cheesecake was yummy too! Look for the green tables.
You’ll see many vendors selling all kinds of things, prices are not generally on the items, you have to ask…which I SO hate. Thankfully Mr. B is happy to do that. Vendors were not willing to haggle, not even €1 for most of them! I heard that during peak season (summer) they are less willing to haggle so hold out for the colder weather if you want some deals.
We scored some military memorabilia, an old drawer set filled with postcards, letters, etc, some Danish cookie presses which was on my ‘to get list’ before leaving here, check!
and a sign for my daughter.
We also ate lunch at the little cafe, they had some yummy sandwiches and the prices were really reasonable, I’d recommend stopping there for a bite to eat! Note the sandwiches are huge and can easily be split/shared!
