Heading to the Garmisch or Salzburg area and looking for itinerary ideas? I’m sharing our Garmisch itinerary which included the Berchgarten area and Salzburg! We went for 4 nights, 2 were in the Austria area near Garmisch and the other 2 were in between Salzburg & Munich.
Day 1 (Monday)
After crossing border, stop at gas station on right to get 5 day vignette for €8,80
Neuschwanstein Castle – approx 5 hour from the Spangdahlem area. Mary’s bridge for best view of the castle, walked around grounds
Stopped at pull off by the amazing blue water to climb down near it and play around for a bit.
Highline 179/Ehrenburg ruins – 24 mins from Neuschwanstein.
Don’t forget to try to pull the sword from the stone!
Headed to our family Bed & Breakfast Alte Schmiede in Leutach, Austria it was at the base of the Alps and amazing! Highly recommend! – approx. 1 hour from Highline 179, 45 mins from the Garmsich area.
Dinner at a local restaurant 5 mins from apartment.
Day 2 (Tuesday)
Partnach Gorge – 45 mins from apartment.
Park near Olympic Stadium and pop in there for a view of the ski jump!
Garmisch for lunch, ate at
Linderhof Palace – 30 mins from the parking at Olympic Stadium
Make sure to visit the grotto!
Freilichtmuseum Glentleiten/Open Air Museum – 1 hour from Linderhof Palace.
If you do this make sure you have time, we only had an hour before closing so it was rushed. They did give us reduced admission though.
Dinner in Mittenwald Old Town – 1 hour from open air museum, but only 22 mins from Apartment.
Day 3 (Wednesday)
Eagle’s Nest – 2.5 hours from apartment/stayed at different hotel next 2 nights
Note it’s not open year round and not worth the visit if cloudy. We didn’t have time to visit the Dokumentation Obersalzberg but it’s near where you park if you have time.
Luge Sommerrodelbahn – 3 mins from the Eagle’s Nest parking.
Hallien Salt Mines – 15 mins from the Eagle’s Nest Parking area.
If you go early enough you can use the free entrance into the Celtic museums as well.
Headed to hotel and had dinner at the restaurant there. Wouldn’t recommend this one though – 1 hour 45 mins from salt mines.
Day 4 (Thursday)
Old Town Salzburg – 1 hour 30 mins from apartment.
Hohensalzburg Fortress – in Old Town
Stopped at grocery store and grabbed stuff for an easy dinner (crackers, cheese, fruit, etc).
Day 5 (Friday)
Drive home day
Dachau Concentration Camp – 1 hour 10 mins from hotel on way home.
Ate lunch at an Italian restaurant 5 mins from Dachau and then drove the 5.5 hours home.
We packed our days pretty full and seen a lot during our trip! You can easily do less or more if your real adventurous! We also chose to stay further outside of the Garmisch area and it was so worth it and breathtaking! The Bavaria area has been one of our favorite trips so far, I’d highly recommend making the time to go visit this area! I will say I personally prefer it when the mountains are snow capped. I have went in April before and it was amazing, when we went in late June they no longer had snow on the tops and were not a pretty in my opinion.
